Skunder Boghossian: Pioneer of modern African art

Alexander Skunder Boghossian was born in 1937, in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa. He grew up to become a phenomenon in contemporary African Art. His mother was Ethiopian and his father Armenian. Boghossian was not influenced by his paternal heritage; the topic of his creations was exclusively African. He was both Ethiopian and Armenian, creating pieces inspired by his African heritage rooted in the similar struggle of belonging and survival, which reigns true in both Armenian and African histories. more

Enkutatash!

Enkutatash is the word for the Ethiopian new year in Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia, while it is called Ri’se Awde Amet (Head Anniversary) in Ge’ez, the term preferred by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. It occurs on September 11 in the Gregorian calendar, except for leap years, when it occurs on September 12.

Madcon (short for Mad Conspiracy), made up of Tshawe Baqwa (Kapricon) and Yosef Wolde-Mariam (Critical) is a Norwegian hip hop duo. Critical was born in Norway, with parents from Ethiopia and Eritrea while Kapricorn was born in Germany from South African parents but grew up in Tveita in eastern Oslo.

Gabriel Teodros ft. Abyssinian Creole

Abyssinian Creole is a hip hop group based in Seattle, Washington. The group consists of MCs Gabriel Teodros and Khingz, DJ  WD4D, and producer Kitone. The significance behind the name Abyssinian Creole comes from the bridging of “the oldest African nation to the newest African tongue” and references the lyricists’ Ethiopian, Eritrean, Haitian, and Dominican roots.
